Sporters in de Verenigde Staten hebben ontzet gereageerd op de bestorming van het Capitool door aanhangers van president Donald Trump. Er werden met name vergelijkingen gemaakt met eerdere optredens van veiligheidsfunctionarissen, afgelopen zomer bij demonstranten van de Black Lives Matter-beweging.
,,Het leger noch de nationale garde heb ik gezien", zei Doc Rivers, coach van de basketballers van Philadelphia 76'ers. ,,Dat is in veel opzichten een bewijs van bepaalde privileges."
'Wat als zwarten dit hadden gedaan?'
,,Kunt u zich voorstellen wat er gebeurd was als het zwarten waren geweest die het Capitool bestormd hadden?", vroeg Rivers zich hardop af. Zijn collega Steve Clifford van Orlando Magic: ,,Ons land wordt in de hele wereld uitgelachen. Dat begon al met de manier waarop we de pandemie hebben aangepakt, tot nu. Het is een trieste dag.”
Onder anderen voetbalster Megan Rapinoe, turnster Simone Biles en velen uit de NBA uitten hun ongenoegen over het verschil in optreden op Twitter.
